Did you know that being sedentary or inactive can harm physical and mental health? Long periods of sitting can slow metabolism, impair the body's ability to manage blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and result in lower productivity, lethargy and stress. On the other hand, physical activity can increase energy levels, productivity, and protect against stress, depression and chronic disease.
We understand it can be hard to fit physical activity into a busy week, but the principles of physical activity in Healthy Weight For Life (HWFL) are designed to fit into your routine, so we've compiled some tips to help you stay active at work and/or while working from home.
Fit in as much walking as possible. Reach your daily step goals by parking further away from the office and walking part of the way, or if you have a long commute, try walking or cycling instead of driving or taking public transport.
If you work from home, take regular breaks to walk around your house or outside. Even a short walk around the block can boost energy and productivity.
Dress for success. Working from home allows you to dress more comfortably. Throw on your activewear to motivate yourself to move more during breaks or before and after work.
If you're in the office, have a bag packed with activewear so you can take advantage of lunchtime walks, runs, or yoga sessions in the park with colleagues.
Get up from your desk every hour. Extended periods of sitting can impact concentration, productivity and physical health. Stand up and walk around when taking phone calls or invest in a stand-up desk. Set reminders in your calendar to stay accountable.
Make the most of your lunch break. Use it to fit in some physical activity. Instead of eating lunch at your desk or working through your break, go for a walk - even invite colleagues to form a social walking group. Have joggers and a water bottle at your desk or doorstep so you're always ready.
The Heart Foundation offers support for workplace and community walking groups - visit their website for more info.
Walk more in the office. Take the longest route to the water cooler, walk to a colleague's desk instead of phoning, and offer to go on the lunch or coffee run. This will help you stay hydrated and focused.
Turn office tasks and household chores into physical activity. Do calf raises and stretches while waiting by the printer and fit in squats and balance exercises while doing the laundry, brushing your teeth, vacuuming or gardening.
Have a plan B for bad weather. Have a backup plan for days when it's too hot, cold, or wet to exercise outside. Try digital exercise apps, indoor swimming, dance classes or using flights of stairs.
Making physical activity a part of your routine is important for physical and mental health. With these simple tips, you should be able to find ways to fit it into your day, no matter if you're working in an office, from home or a combination of both.
