Autumn 2022 HWFL Newsletter

Welcome to the Autumn 2022 HWFL Graduate Newsletter!

Over the last few months, the HWFL team have noticed that many of our members are interested in advice regarding how to participate in social situations and eating out, without sabotaging their weight loss progression.

This is not surprising considering the recent relaxation of COVID restrictions and celebrations like Easter and lovely long weekends to make the most of this time with family and friends.

In this edition we have asked the HWFL team members to share one of their personal tips for eating out and social occasions.

We also share some of the successes of the HWFL Graduates Group. The Grad group continues to provide excellent motivation and support for almost 1000 Graduates just like you.

This edition of the newsletter will be followed up with more great tips, recipes & a new ingredient to help you maintain a Healthy Weight For Life.

Best wishes,

Your Healthy Weight For Life team

"I find the serving sizes at restaurants can often be larger than I would normally prepare for myself at home so I will often ask for an entrée size meal as my main but I will also order a side of steamed greens or a salad to round it out."

Nicole - Clinical and Operations Director

"I consider the balance of the menu item I choose. For example - will it contain protein, carbohydrate and veg, in reasonable amounts, or be predominately just one of these macronutrients, like risotto which is predominately carbohydrate. And I always ask for any sauce or dressing to be served on the side."

Rachel - Dietitian, Patient support

“I generally avoid fried menu options and go for the grilled alternative. I enjoy this more and feel less bloated and uncomfortable, so I can enjoy the social outing more. If I am ordering a pub meal, I choose the vegetable/salad option rather than the chips. If I am drinking alcohol, I would generally go for a soda water with vodka or gin, with fresh lemon or lime, avoiding other carbonated mixers that are usually high sugar”

Jess - Registered Nurse, Patient Support

“Look at the menu before you go (google the restaurant menu, they usually have it on their websites) and plan ahead. Knowing what you will choose at the time will help you manage how this event will fit in with your usual daily intake. It also helps avoid temptation when having to make a meal choice in, sometimes, a short amount of time.”

Vicky - Enrolled nurse, Patient support

“ I like vegan, plant-based meals however, I also try to choose smaller meals like entree sized meals. Always discuss with the wait staff how your meal will be cooked. Can the meal be tweaked? More vegetables added and sauces and dressings served separately? Choosing baked or grilled rather than fried. Also limiting alcoholic drinks.”

Edina - Office administration

“The addition of alcohol, when celebrating and socialising, can be tricky and often difficult to avoid. Volunteering to be the designated driver helps support moderation therefore impacting weight loss goals less.”

Lisa - Nurse, Patient support

“I find what I drink can make a big difference to my decision making and overall intake. After a couple of alcoholic drinks the temptation to make poorer food choices increases. I try to drink as much water as possible and only order a glass of wine once I have ordered my meal to enjoy with my food.”

Amanda - Nutritionist, Patient support

“I think your mindset is important in how you regard social occasions. Try not to see them as a barrier to your weight loss journey but as an opportunity to practice what you have learned.”

Karina - Dietitian, Patient support

“If, despite my best efforts, I feel as though I have overindulged at a social occasion I try to balance things out over the next day or two by using KicStart to replace one or two meals.”

Luke - CEO Prima Health

“I find serving sizes too large at restaurants my husband and I often split a main meal and order a salad to share”

Megan - Registered Nurse, Patient support
