Five tips to enjoy a mindful festive season

Multigen family beach HR

One of the many benefits of the HWFL program is that it sets you up with skills for healthy weight management in everyday life, and all year round.

Here are some tips to help with enjoying these festive times and navigating the celebrations whilst maintaining your health goals.

1. Practice your basics

Reframe the festive season as an opportunity to practice your HWFL skills. The true litmus test for sustainable habits is when you are outside your usual routine and challenged with social events.

Think about which skills are appropriate at your next social gathering or holiday. You might like to contribute a platter of free food dips and veges or a bright bowl of juicy berries to a party or event that you are invited to.

Get creative and adventurous with your activity while away on holiday.

Apply your portion-planned plate skills to your next party dinner plate or practice the HWFL mindful strategies so you don’t get side-tracked by non-hunger eating episodes.

2. Make an action plan

To help ensure you won’t undo all your hard work this year, you will want to have a strategy in place for social gatherings. List the possible triggers that you think could lead you astray and jot down an alternative action that you are going to take instead. For example, if the tables of food platters will tempt you then place yourself on the other side of the room and immerse yourself in good company and conversation. If alcohol lowers your resolve, volunteer to be the designated driver so you have a pre-determined limit for consumption during the event, and stay well hydrated between hard drinks with sparkling mineral water.

3. Remind yourself of your motivations and values

When sheer willpower wanes and the sweet treats are beckoning to you, remind yourself what it is that you enjoy about your new healthy lifestyle– is it improved mobility, less pain, better sleep, less medication, or more energy to spend with the kids or grandkids?

Also, ask yourself what are your values. What’s the “why” behind your journey to a healthier you? Do you maintain your activity routine and mindful food choices because you value self-betterment, and hard work, or is it because you want to be a role model to your family or children? Being in tune with this can spur you on to stay on track and motivated.

4. Soften your expectations for yourself

Fixating on perfection can lead to an “all-or-nothing” mindset, which in turn increases the likelihood of bingeing and the inevitable guilt that ensues.

While enjoying more snacks, desserts or restaurant meals, or being less strict about your activity during the festive season may prevent weight loss, following a more flexible approach will reap the benefits of less weight gain or can even help you to maintain your current weight into the New Year. Allow yourself to relax your expectations of yourself.

Your food and activity (or inactivity) are choices you make for your self-care. Just do it mindfully!

5. Make every moment count!

A part of enjoying festivities, while keeping your lifelong health goals in sight, is to be selective about what you choose to spend your calories on. Recognise that denying yourself isn’t realistic, but you don’t need to say ‘yes’ to every morsel of food or drink  you are offered either, Accept that these are special and enjoyable moments for yourself.

Be selective about sampling just a few of your favourite items amongst the choices available to you and slowly and deliberately savour them. This way, you have empowered yourself with choice, remained in the moment and removed the negative or distracting thoughts which can diminish your experience.
